Mercedes star Lewis Hamilton ‘risks F1 ban’ as he sends message to FIA

Mercedes star Lewis Hamilton has acknowledged that he is prepared to violate the FIA’s new free speech guidelines as long as he can use them to further his cause. A race ban is one of the possible sanctions for drivers who speak out, something he is willing to take a chance on.

For the upcoming season, the FIA unveiled new regulations that would restrict how much drivers could express themselves freely on divisive topics. Since Hamilton is one of the more outspoken men in the paddock, the degree’s prohibition on “personal, religious, and political statements” without written consent is likely to have a greater impact on him than on most.

The British man is a vocal supporter of the LGBTQ+ community and champions several causes, most notably black rights, and representation. The seven-time world champion, who is the latest driver to oppose the FIA’s plans, has insisted that nothing will stop him from speaking out.

“Nothing will stop me from speaking on the things I am passionate about,” Hamilton explained after the Mercedes 2023 car launch. “The sport has a responsibility to speak out and create awareness on important topics, particularly as we are travelling to different places. So nothing changes.”

After several other drivers, including Alex Albon and Lando Norris, voiced their concerns about the rules, the FIA announced that they would write to the teams to clarify what they mean in practise. A race ban is one of the options available, though it is unclear what penalties could be handed out to those who do not comply.
