Argentine football superstar World Cup Winner Leo Messi has been honoured by the Argentinian Football Association. They did so by renaming the national team’s training centre after him.
Leo Messi, who led Argentina to victory at the World Cup in Qatar last year. He scored seven goals and provided three assists during the tournament. The forward was also awarded the Golden Ball as the best player of the tournament.
The friendly match against Panama on Thursday marked Argentina’s first game since the World Cup final. Each player was presented with a replica of the World Cup trophy in what was viewed as a homecoming for Lionel Scaloni’s team.
The match also marked Leo Messi’s first game in Argentina since the tournament in Qatar, as he currently plays for Paris Saint-Germain in France. Messi expressed his gratitude on Instagram, stating that the recognition was one of the nicest he had ever received.
During the match against Panama, the veteran striker scored a stunning free-kick and Thiago Almada also scored a goal. Messi was overwhelmed with emotion as he was serenaded by thousands of fans inside El Monumental.
For many years, Messi struggled to win a major international trophy with Argentina, losing in multiple finals. He even retired from international football in 2016 due to his disappointment. However, under the leadership of Lionel Scaloni, the team won the Copa America in July 2021, the Finalissima in June 2022, and finally the World Cup five months later. Messi’s outstanding performance in the tournament was a key factor in the team’s success.
